Have the commuters become disciplined in the city? The statistics gathered by the city traffic police about the traffic violations last year suggest that there was a drastic reduction in the traffic violations compared to 2009.

In 2010, there were over seven lakh less cases compared to 2009. The revenue collected from the violators too dipped by over Rs9 crore last year as compared to 2009.

The Pune traffic police had filed over 62,667 cases of traffic violations in 2010, whereas over 8.36 lakh cases were registered in 2009.

Barring violations pertaining to parking of vehicles on footpaths, the other violations decreased last year compared to 2009.

Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Manoj Patil said the new initiatives by the traffic police had a positive impact and the number of traffic violations decreased. “There is a perceptible change in the awareness level of the commuters about rules and regulations,” Patil told DNA.

In 2010, violations such as illegal parking, no entry violations, zebra crossing, signal jumping, having fancy or no number plates and Marathi number plates have come down significantly.

“We focused on issues such as drunken driving, footpath parking and non-functioning of tail lamps. We also acted against fancy number plates,” Patil added. Patil said, “We have not penalised commuters, as there are several wrongly marked zebra crossings in the city.” Last year, about 2,857 cases of zebra crossing violation were registered compared to over one lakh cases in 2009.

“Much more needs to be done to discipline vehicle owners. The traffic police are working overtime to make city roads safer,” Patil added.
The traffic police are connecting with citizens through social networking websites such as Facebook, where people can lodge their grievances.
