Two people, believed to have cheated 40 job aspirants of Rs1.5 lakh each by promising them jobs in a Singapore-based private management firm, were on Wednesday arrested by the economic offences wing (EOW) of the Mumbai crime branch.

The duo was identified as Pankaj Kishorebhai Mistry (alias Prashant Kumar alias Paresh Bhatia) and Shekhar Lakshmikant Sharma (alias Rishi alias Saifuddin Wajid Shaikh).

“Acting on a tip-off from one of the victims, we arrested the duo from a suburban locality,” an EOW official said. “We have recovered Rs3 lakh in cash, 18 passports, mobile phones, laptops and some incriminating documents from them. We are now on the lookout for one of their associates identified as Vijay Kashyap, alias Gamauddin Shaikh.”

The official said the duo floated a bogus company called Arpita Trade Link earlier this year. Situated at the Hindustan Naka in Charkop, the company pretended to deal in job recruitments.
“They carried advertisements in leading newspapers in Goa, stating that recruitments were in progress for a Singapore-based management firm known as MPM Management,” the official said.

“The advertisements further stated that, if selected, the applicants would be entitled to an attractive salary and perks from the company.”

Several aspirants, including complainant Yoginder Ramcharan Naithani, approached the duo for recruitment in response to the advertisement. “After carrying out their medical tests, the duo took Rs1.5 lakh from each applicant as a commission and processing fee and for the purpose of obtaining visas,” the official said.

“Later, they shut down their company and stopped all operations without intimating any of the applicants. The total amount collected by the duo was Rs60 lakh. However, we suspect that the fraud could be to the tune of Rs1.5 crore.”

The victims lodged a complaint with the Charkop police. The case was transferred to the EOW. A probe revealed that a similar cheating case was registered against the two at the Goregaon (East) police station.
