The state government for the first time in 25 years has asked private and deemed medical colleges to declare their fee structures to the government before admissions for undergraduate and post graduate medical courses begin.

Announcing the decision on Friday, Dr Pravin Shingare, Director, Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) said, "Private and deemed colleges would be a part of the state's Common Entrance Process (CAP) and would thus be expected to declare their fee structures to the state which would then be uploaded on the DMER's official website."

The decision comes in the backdrop of several private colleges proposing to hike their fees over five times for NRI and management quota, which is yet to be approved by the Fee Regulation Authority (FRA). The government has fixed fees of 50 per cent seats filled on merit basis at private colleges between Rs 4.50-9.50 lakh.

"Colleges should ideally not charge more than 5 times these fees for their NRI and management quota seats as per the recent Supreme Court order," said Shingare.

Pune's Kashibai Navale Medical college was recently in the news for proposing a hike on its fees from Rs 9 to 95 lakh for the institutional/management quota and Rs 80 lakh for the NRI quota. However, Shingare said that the state has asked the college to not propose an amount five times more than the merit quota fees.

"The fee regulation authority is yet to take a call on the proposed hike. The college cannot charge anything more than what is approved," said Shingare.

The state has also decided to take stringent action against colleges that do not adhere to the fees fixed by the FRA. "A fine will be imposed as prescribed by the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences(MUHS) and can even lead to the cancellation of their affiliation.

...& ANALYSIS

  • Colleges cannot charge anything more than what has been approved by the Fee Regulation Authority (FRA).

  • Aspirants will gain clarity about fee structures of private/deemed colleges, which would help curb malpractices by agents claiming to offer seats at lower rates.

  • Since the state does not have the power to regulate fees of private colleges, fees can go up considerably.
