Think Churchgate and what comes to your mind is the expanse of Victorian buildings. These buildings are decades old and hence need timely maintenance. Churchgate is part of the A/ward, which is considered the VIP ward and is also a major tourist hub. So when one comes across wrecked footpaths in this area, the residents are bound to make a noise.

The area near the BSNL building is a commercial one and often sees visiting dignitaries. The footpath opposite the building is in a mess as a large part of it has paver blocks missing. Pruned trees are dumped in their place and to top it all, cars are also seen parked here.
Kanwal Shahpuri, a Churchgate resident, complains, "The footpaths are not in a good state in most areas of Churchgate. You will find the paver blocks are either loose, sunken, broken or uneven. Certain stretches are avoided by people completely."

The Bhikha Behram Well, a Parsi well that has been standing tall for several centuries, is a Grade I Heritage site. Even though the structure is visited by many, the footpaths outside it are in a pitiable condition. As expected, several paver blocks are missing while some portions are encroached upon by hawkers.
Sharman Sharma, an office-goer in the area, says, "It's quite bad as so many office-goers and tourists access this area so the state of the footpaths reflects badly on us. I think the civic body should look into it seriously." Shahpuri adds, "I think that people don't use the pavements because of the uneven paver blocks. This issue needs the ward's attention."

We tried to reach out to Devidas Kshirsagar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, A/ward, but in vain. Tushar Kolapth, Assistant Engineer (Maintenance) refused to comment on the issue.
