On December 30, a person died and another was injured after a container, which was heading towards Panvel from Thane through Atlanta Mumbra byapss road, hit two other containers that were going to Thane from Panvel.
On September 29, a speeding trailer rammed into two shanties, injuring five people on Mumbra bypass road.
According to the police, of late, Mumbra bypass road has turned into an accident prone zone. "On an average, there are at least four to five cases of accidents reported every week on Mumbra bypass road," says an official from Mumbra.
The reasons for these accidents are multiple. Firstly, the road is riddled with potholes, lack of signboards, lack of safety barricades and dividers. Plus there are shanties on the sides of the road which make it more prone to accidents.
"The road was full of potholes, but that has been taken care of now," said Dr Shrikant Shinde, MP, Kalyan, who took up the issue with guardian minister Eknath Shinde and TMC.
Illegal shanties, which were earlier only on one side of the road, have now mushroomed on the other side as well. "Kids from these shanties are often found playing on the road, which is also one of the reasons for disrupting traffic and causing accidents," said Satyajit Shah, an activist.
Shinde added, "We raised the issue of illegal hutments with then TMC chief Aseem Gupta. With the new civic chief resuming office, we will take up the issue with him as well."
