Mumbai: Drug addict attempts burglary, arrested

On Wednesday the Naupada police arrested a 31-year-old for allegedly attempting burglary. The accused, Salim Abdulaziz Ansari, is a history-sheeter and was released four months ago in a similar attempt. According to the police, Ansari is a drug-addict and while he was breaking the lock of a house at Laxmi Sadan in Charai, when a passer-by spotted him and alerted other locals, who handed him over to the police.

Investigation officer, S Kale from Naupada police station said, "The accused first examined the area and started to break the lock on second floor. A passer-by saw suspected that he was not from the area. He immediately informed the owner of the house, who run a paper-selling business in the same building. The accused tried to escape when the crowd gathered, but the locals caught him and thrashed him."

A case under sections 454 (Lurking house-trespass or house-breaking in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment) and 511 (Punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered. Ansari was produced in court and has been given magistrate custody.

Kale further added, "The accused was a task for us as he is a drug addict and when he was arrested he was continously asking to give some drugs. He was not in his state of mind. The accused have no relatives and not even a friend. When asked he said he wanted to have MD drug and with the robbing money he will go to Dadar area and will but the Md drug and so was doing robbery at home".
