The Special Woman's Court on Tuesday charged against six jail officers who were arrested in the alleged murder case of a jail inmate, Manjula Shetye, on June 23, 2017. The court presided over by Judge Shayana Patil, has levied them with charges of murder, conspiracy, criminal intimidation and destruction of evidence. All the six jail officers pleaded not guilty of the charges.

Manjula Shetye, a convict serving life imprisonment in Byculla prison, was allegedly beaten to death by the jail warden, Manisha Pokharkar. Other jail staffers including constables Bindu Naikade, Waseema Shaikh, Shital Shegaonkar, Surekha Gulve and Aarti Shingne had also joined in the assault.

The prosecution had submitted the list of draft charges which it would like to press against the accused and the court was about to decide on the same. When the court was about to frame charges, the accused had filed an application seeking to adjourn the same as their counsel had not appeared. It was, however, rejected by the court.

The court called them to the witness box and informed that they in connivance with each other, had hatched a criminal conspiracy to kill Manjula Shetye and accordingly had implemented same, leading to the death of Shetye. Later, they destroyed the evidence and also threatened other prisoners with similar consequences. The accused denied the charges.

The court has thus adjourned the start of the trial to July 3.
