Following heavy rains on Tuesday morning, the elevated compound wall of an old society in Khar's Union Park area collapsed, bringing two parked cars rolling down on the road along with the debris. The wall acted as closed parking space for the Sea Hill society and as a retaining wall for the hill on which the society is located.

No injuries were reported and none of the cars suffered any serious damage.

The society's member secretary, Hemant Sonar, said the compound wall has been maintained well by the society for the last 40 years, since the building came into existence. "We regularly get structural audits done for the building and maintain it well. We never noticed any crack on the wall. We guess because of the rains the structure had absorbed water through its wears and tears and would have weakened," he said, adding that the fire brigade, the local ward and the police were prompt in reaching the spot and pick up the cars from the debris. He rubbished claims of a road cave-in.

"We will check with our consultant and invite tenders to rebuild the wall. Expenses will be taken care of by the society," said Sonar.
