The cave in incident of a footpath adjoining the security wall of Thane Central Jail that led to the death of a 35-year-old Rabodi homemaker Jamila Khan has opened a Pandora's box.

Following the incident, local corporators blamed civic officials for bad planning of the underground sewage lines that passes under the jail and leads to the treatment plant near Thane Creek.

Mahesh Wagh, local corporator of the Rabodi area where the incident took place, said he was unaware about any development work carried out by his funds. "The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) had carried out the development work through their own funds. The decision to have a drainage line passing through a high security prison is wrong."

He added: "The basic rule is that a corporator cannot take decision to pass the funds for a project that would pass underneath the Thane Central Jail which is not only a security concern but pertains to the approval of the state government."

The development work of the nullah was ongoing for the past four years. The civic officials have done a bad planning and shoddy work by the contractors led to the mishap that took the life of a housewife. The officials did not even take our permission to plan such developments, added Wagh.

When contacted Sandeep Malvi, PRO for TMC, said: "The probe committee will ascertain the facts and details regarding the project and if civic officials are found guilty action would be taken."

On Sunday, Thane police registered a case of culpable homicide against road contractor and TMC officials following the Khan's death after the footpath she was walking on caved in.
