Data obtained from the Public Health department of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reveals that there has been a five percent rise in the number of dengue cases in South Mumbai as compared to last year.

Dr Trupti Trivedi of Lokmanya Tilak (Sion) Hospital talking with iamin said, “We have noticed a rise in the number of dengue cases in the past two to three weeks, with patients coming from all age groups. There is a rapid increase in cases of H1N1 and leptospirosis as well.” The most affected areas are Colaba, Girgaum, Worli, Mahim, Dadar and Dharavi.

She said that most of the cases require immediate hospitalization, indicating that people are arriving late for diagnosis at civic-run hospitals. “This is because people ignore primary symptoms of the disease, caused by Aedes Aegypti mosquito by consuming pain-killers and paracetamols. This eases the severe body-ache and high temperature that they experience. Only when they feel that these household treatments are not working do they rush to the hospitals,” she added. She also insisted that one should avoid taking pain killers and immediately get themselves diagnosed.

Going by the official numbers, 47 people have been infected with dengue in Colaba itself in the past two weeks, followed by 64 in Dadar.

Last year, the city recorded over 861 cases of dengue with 12 deaths. BMC executive health officer Dr Padmaja Keskar said, “Our insecticide department is conducting inspections of all commercial and residential structures. We are trying to spread awareness, fumigating premises as well as slapping fines on mosquito-breeding sites.”
