“I was very naughty in school and was often punished by teachers,” said veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, as he virtually addressed over 10,000 students from 200 civic schools in the city.

Bachchan, who was at the MCGM civic centre in Dadar on Wednesday, launched Valuable Group’s virtual classroom which will now cater to around 480 BMC schools in the city. The initiative named Edubeam has been catering to 80 civic schools in the city since the past two years. It enables guest academics and teachers to lecture students through digital blackboards and screens.

Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray, mayor Sunil Prabhu, BMC commissioner Sitaram Kunte were among other dignitaries who were present at the launch which was held on Bal Thackeray’s birth anniversary.

“Education makes us aware of our rights in society. I am happy to note that technology has pervaded deep into the realms of education and is going to make a difference to students from BMC schools,” said Bachchan. He added that efforts must be taken to educate every girl child. “It amazes me when I see empowered women on Kaun Banega Crorepati, who struggled to educate themselves, but went on to become successful role models.”

All the questions that the students raised were around the actor’s school days. Bachchan candidly revealed that he was very mischievous in school and was punished frequently.

“I would write on classroom walls, steal pencils and have petty fights. I was either made to stand on the bench or thrown out of the classroom,” he said and urged students to not follow his example and concentrate on their studies.

Bachchan also revealed that he was not much into films during his childhood.

“I never decided to become an actor. I used to perform in plays and participate in sports as a child. It was only later that I decided to try my luck in the city as an actor. A lot of people rejected me initially. But I didn’t lose hope. My father always told me that if a door is closed and you can’t find the keys to it, jump up the wall and enter. That’s what I did.”

Bachchan, who couldn’t hide his excitement while interacting with the students, said, “It is amazing to see so many children watching me virtually from their schools . This is a revolutionary education system empowered by technology and I would like to support it.” He added that he would love to be a part of more such campaigns in the future.
