Bundled in a sack, Pom thrown out of moving car in Mumbai

Such heartless cases of abandonment of pedigree canines are on a sharp rise, say concerned activists.

For the bouncy Pomeranian that was found tied up in a gunny bag and thrown out of a moving car on Tulsi Pipe Road in Dadar on Wednesday morning that’s quite the dog’s life. The dog, which walks with a limp, is now under treatment at the Parel animal hospital.

“Its right hind limb is fractured,” said Dr Mayur Dangar, manager, Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Parel. The dog, which looks aged, was possibly kept in total neglect by its owners, he said. This is the second time in three days that an abandoned pedigree canine has been brought to this hospital. On Sunday, a rescue team picked up an abandoned and ailing German Shepherd from Borivli. “The dog, which was fed biscuits and milk by a few shopkeepers, appeared lost and forlorn,” said a Goregaon resident who called up the animal hospital.

On Wednesday, the hospital’s rescue team picked up the Pom after a Dadar resident made a frantic call. Sujit Shetty, who saw “something in a gunny bag flouncing violently” in the middle of the road near the Dadar flower market, made that call. “It was a heart-rending sight. How can humans be so cruel to man’s best friend?” asked Shetty. “Right at the spot where the dog was flung out of the car, there was a traffic policeman but he did not bother to help.”

The number of such cases of dogs being abandoned has been on the rise in recent times.

Thane-based activist Meet Ashar, who volunteers for a host of animal rescue organisations, said
that he has seen at least one pedigree dog abandoned in Thane every week over the last
six months.

“A few da\ys ago, we rescued an abandoned Labrador which had been tethered to a lamppost on the highway near Vikhroli. The dog is now being treated at Thane’s SPCA.”

He was, however, aghast when he saw an eight-month old Labrador pure championship breed dog abandoned after being fed a libido-booster. “Such was the effect that the abandoned dog tried to constantly get physical and get into the act even at the sight of humans,” said Ashar, raising suspicions that its food might have possibly been laced with libido-enhancers for quick procreation, with an intent to exploit the litter for commercial purposes.

Shakuntala Majumdar, president of SPCA, Thane, said it was high time pets in the city were micro-chipped to help track down their owners. “Currently, cruelty to animals is a non-cognisable offence and it’s very rare that a person who abandons a pet gets caught or punished,” said Majumdar.
