The Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed the state government to take immediate action to stop exploitation of children across 109 hostels in Pune.

A division bench of justices Abhay Oka and AS Gadkari observed that it was the state government's obligation to uphold the rights of the children. The direction was made during the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Help Mumbai Foundation. The PIL has raised the issue of exploitation of children residing in ashram shalas.

There are 109 hostels or ashram shalas in Pune. The state government had carried out a raid of these hostels in March-April. Only 34 were registered with the government. A report was submitted in July, but action was taken after a long time, only after the issue was taken up by court.

The court directed the state to file an action-taken report by January 16. The judges have also asked it to inform them when it will implement all the recommendations of the justice (retd) CS Dharmadhikari committee to curb atrocities against women.
