A well-deserved retreat on the quieter beaches of Goa afflicted this writer with major holiday withdrawals. In between thoughts of wanting to leave everything and shift to the susegaad state and the dread of impending work deadlines, a friend egged her on to make it to Café by the Beach for temporary relief. "You get to be in Goa and back in no time," he promised.

And transported she was—not because of the food or the alcohol (which unfortunately isn't served here), but simply owing to the ambience—a sea-facing deck with sandy floors, wooden chairs and tables and fairy lights and lamps that hang by coconut trees. Café by the Beach reopened its doors (after a brief closure) for casual meals and for people to lounge lazily after indulging in the water sport activities that the H2O Waterfront Complex offers. On the menu are light bites including a variety of wraps, sandwiches, salads, quiche and desserts along with summery drinks to wash it all down.

First, the Cous Cous Orange Salad (Rs. 275) was called for, which proved to be a befitting choice to commence with. The fluffy cous cous moistened perfectly with orange juice and served with grilled bell peppers were the makings of a good meal. Next came the Smoked Chicken, Sundried Tomato and Mozzarella Sandwich (Rs. 375) that gave a good mouthful in every bite. On another occasion, Shoeb Hasan, an MBA student from Breach Candy, shared that he prefers to spend his afternoons with friends over the Chocolate Tsunami (Rs. 350), a sinful concoction of chocolate, cookies and whipped cream. The writer, mindful of her diet, opted for the Guava Lava (Rs. 225) but ended her meal with a cheat dessert—Waffles with Hazelnut and Chocolate Drizzle (Rs.275). Mahalaxmi resident Maithili Mullick vouches for the Chicken Junglee Sandwich (Rs.175), which the café claims to be the locals' favourite.

The restaurant aims at incorporating main course meals too but one mustn't be deceived by the nature of the light bites; they can be shared adequately between two people. Satisfied by the supplemented environs and great food, it was time to get back to the real world, knowing well that there will be more visits until the next visit across the state border.
