Got a balcony? Keep plants — that seems to be the mantra for Sriram Aravamudan, co-owner of My Sunny Balcony.

According to Sriram, indoor plants are definitely independent of season. But when it comes to growing plants exposed to the elements of nature, it is essential to keep in mind the microclimate of the area. It is crucial to know and understand that plants too have their natural cycle.

Sriram takes residential layouts of Bangalore as an example to point out that it is common to see frangipani flowers strewn on pavements on either sides of the road. People tend to forget the concepts of blooming and hibernation and destroy plants that are in the process of producing beauty at its best. But then, "No plant blooms throughout the year," says Sriram.

Whether the balcony is commodious or of the type that provides for just enough space to accommodate nature's viewers, space needs to be utilised wisely. Light weight plastic containers are best to grow plants on the balcony in. Hanging baskets are another option to grow runner beans and strawberries. But again, caution needs to be exercised over the weight of the containers and soil. For a new construction, prior planning is required under the guidance of a civil engineer to ensure the strength of walls and avoid water seepage.

On a lighter note, Sriram says, "The key to a successful garden is to understand and be patient with plants."
So, go on and experiment, and don't forget to take care.
