With huge, metallic pendants hanging down your necks, chunky bracelets and funky earrings, you will have little trouble standing out anywhere. Junk jewellery is hardly what it says it is and, in fact, is treasured by every woman. A must-have in everybody’s accessories, the colourful beads and eye-catching designs brighten up any outfit.

Says Vidya Nair, a graduate student and a firm believer of keeping her gigantic purple ring on her finger at all times, “Junk jewellery makes a great statement. They go pretty much with everything I usually wear. I put on one beaded necklace and I’m good to go.”
Designer Tanya Bhat stresses on how much fun junk jewellery can be. “It’s a cool way to express oneself and you can even showcase your moods through them,” she says. Her friend, the immaculately accessorised Ila Naidu, says “I’d rather call them costume jewellery. The term ‘junk’ is very inappropriate.” She usually picks up her beloved necklaces when she travels around, but when back in Bangalore, she loves shopping for them at Mango and Anokhi Fashions. “Amrapali is a great place if you’re looking for silver jewellery,” she adds. She seems to have found love in her bib necklaces, this time around.

Costume jewellery is also available in abundance on some of Bangalore’s busiest streets — Brigade Road and Commercial Street — are filled with huge stores and roadside stalls, with every last piece of jewellery you ever dreamed of.

“Because it’s summer!” says junk jewellery aficionado Arundhati C, while swearing that all the colours must sit somewhere in one’s attire this season, and where better than in the jewellery! In a season that takes you out on vacations and gives back a great amount of your favourite ice-creams, making your days colourful and fun, there isn’t a better way to show how you feel than using ‘junk jewellery’. You could look like an entire spectrum, and love it!
