Even though the price of cooking gas was reduced at the start of new year, the consumer has not got much relief because since that day there has been a steady increase in the fuel prices in the city.

On Tuesday, diesel price per litre was pegged at Rs 65.03 per litre while petrol logged in Rs 73.44 a litre. The Tuesday rates have been highest in January 2018 so far.

These rates have now reached the level of October 2017 when the rate of petrol was Rs 73.53 per litre on October 3 and diesel was priced at Rs Rs 63.23. On the same day, the union government reduced the excise duty by Rs 2 per litre on petrol and diesel. However after since then, more or less, the rates have been increasing.

On January 8, the rate of petrol was Rs 73.34 per liter while diesel Rs 64.83.  On January 7, petrol's price tag was Rs 73.19 while diesel recorded Rs 64.63.

The rates on January 1 for petrol was Rs 72.74 per litre  while diesel was Rs 63.89.

Apart from steady rise, there has been difference of Rs 10 between petrol and diesel prices.

Notably, the rising fuel prices, specially diesel, affects the market and the transporters gradually increase the freight. This results in increase in price of many commodities.

The rates have more or less been rising only ever since the daily rates started coming in from mid-June last year.

The only respite consumers have got after the start of this month has been drop in the price of cooking gas cylinder.

After a monthly review of the prices, the cooking gas price was reduced by Rs 6 in the domestic cooking gas category. The 14.2 kg gas cylinder was priced at Rs 735 but now, it is Rs 729.

The amount of subsidy of Rs 237.2 which was getting deposited in the accounts of the consumers will now get subsidy of Rs 231.2
