With stage set for the keenly-contested elections for the office-bearers of Rajpath Club here on Sunday, the two panels of candidates, led by incumbent president Paresh Dani and NG Patel, were busy mustering last-minute support for their candidates on Saturday. The elections are being held after seven years.

On the eve of the poll, a heated debate was seen between the members of the rival panels at an Extraordinary General Meeting called by the club management on Saturday. Patel panel voiced fears of bogus voting during the elections.

Interestingly, now even those members who do not have a smart card of their membership, issued by the club, will be able to vote. All that they need is to provide a government photo-identity proof such as driving licence, passport or other such documents. This change in rules was effected on the Dani’s panel suggestion that the club should also allow those who are members but do not have membership card, to vote in the elections.

To this suggestion, the Patel panel raised some objections which resulted in a heated debate between the two groups. More than 150 members attended the EGM. The Patel panel further alleged that the club’s election officials and legal advisors were pro-Dani.

“The election officials and legal advisors are puppets of Dani’s panel and so there is a chance of bogus voting happening,” said Patel.

On the issue of allowing voters without membership card to vote in the election, Patel said that some days ago it was the Dani panel that had said such voters should not be allowed to cast their votes.
