Unclaimed object explodes, bomb found under bridge in Assam

A powerful bomb went off here despite being detected earlier while army halted movement of traffic on the NH 52 in Sonitpur district after spotting an explosive under a bridge, in separate incidents in Assam since late last night.
 
In Guwahati, the improvised explosive device (IED) kept in an abandoned bag was first detected by police near a roadside temple in Fancy Bazar and the bomb disposal squad immediately covered it with a bomb blanket last midnight, official sources said.
 
However, before it could be safely defused the explosive went off but with minimum impact due to the blanket without causing injury to anyone, the sources said.
 
In Sonitpur district, army and Assam Rifles stopped movement of traffic between Tezpur and Dhekiajuli for three hours after finding a powerful bomb was planted under Dipota bridge, about three km away from Tezpur, the sources said.

The security forces finally allowed vehicles to move at 7.30am after having recovered and defused the bomb, suspected to have been planted by NDFB, the sources said.
 
However, local police, the village headman, villagers and journalists present there claimed not having seen any explosive.
