At around 11:45 pm on Monday, the roof of the verandah of the Rajputs' house collapsed. The children, Kamlesh, 5, and Satpal, 7, were playing in the veranda at that time.
Two children, aged 5 and 7, died of house collapse, early in the morning on Tuesday. The incident took place in Narol, and the Vatva police have registered a case of accidental death.
At around 11:45 pm on Monday, the roof of the verandah of the Rajputs' house collapsed. The children, Kamlesh, 5, and Satpal, 7, were playing in the veranda at that time.
Following the collapse, neighbours immediately came to their rescue, calling the 108 ambulance services for medical assistance and simultaneously removing debris to rescue the kids as well. With their timely intervention, the children were alive when they were being taken to the LG hospital for treatment.
However, while undergoing treatment, five-year old Kamlesh died at 6 am. Satpal, who had been shifted to VS hospital for further treatment, also died at around 9 am.
The father of the children, one Dharmendra Rajput, works a truck driver in Mumbai, and travels frequently from Mumbai to Ahmedabad due to his job. The family, economically unstable, has been living in Ahmedabad, in a house that was reportedly very weak. Rajput is reported to have carried out repairs only a few days ago, but it did not prove sufficient. Prima facie investigations revealed that the verandah collapsed due to lack of adequate support.
Kamlesh and Satpal were the couple's only kids. The parents performed their last rites on Tuesday. The police department is yet to take the father's statement. For further investigations, the building department has been asked to inspect the place and give their reasons for the roof's collapse.
