Tension gripped Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU) in Anantapur today after police cane charged students, who were protesting the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

The trouble began when police prevented the students from taking out a 'peace rally' in the SKU campus as the demonstration did not have a permission.

Police baton charged students to control and quell violence after some of them pelted stones at the cops. "Permission was denied to the students to hold the ally as they burnt a heavy stock of cables two days ago. We never object to controlled demonstrations," Anantapur district superintendent of police MK Singh said.

However, students alleged that some policemen in plain clothes came amid students and started pelting stones. Meanwhile, Congress MLAs from Rayalaseema region held a sit-in outside the chief minister's Office in the Secretariat in  Andhra Pradesh, protesting police action against students.

"Home minister Sabita Reddy should take responsibility for the incident. She consoled the students of Osmania University who were agitating for separate Telangana. She should not be partial. Otherwise, she should quit," senior TDP legislator P Keshav said.
