Samajwadi Party today rejected suggestions that it had backed the Congress-led government at the Centre to save party leaders from CBI cases and said it continued the support as there was no other option as opposition forces are in "disarray".

"It would be wrong to say that we decided to lend support to the UPA government last year to protect our leaders from CBI cases. We did that in national interest. We are supporting the current UPA government after the Lok Sabha elections as we don't want to be branded as impulsive allies, somebody who is in one day and out the other day," SP general secretary Amar Singh told mediapersons from Singapore.

He said SP is also supporting the government as it has no other option as of now.

"If the UPA government today completed its 100 days in office in the second stint, it is also because our blood and sweat are also involved in it. We have no other option as of now than to support UPA. BJP is facing problems and is not able to come out of its communal mindset. The other opposition parties are also in disarray," Singh said.

He said SP also did not want to be blamed for shaking the foundations of the newly-formed government.

He, however, said in the previous budget session of Parliament, SP had played the role of a "responsible opposition" in the absence of a divided BJP.
