The Allahabad high court today directed the Centre's counsel to seek instructions on a writ petition demanding that the investigation into corruption cases against former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh be handed over to the Enforcement Directorate.

The order was passed by a division bench comprising justice Vinod Prasad and Justice Rajesh Chandra, which fixed April 2 as the next date of hearing.

The order came on the writ petition of Shivkant Tripathi, a resident of Kanpur, who had lodged an FIR against Amar Singh at Babupurwa police station on October 15 last year under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Prevention of Corruption Act and Money Laundering Act.

In the FIR it has been alleged that Singh was responsible for large scale financial irregularities that took place in awarding contracts while his party was in power in Uttar Pradesh.

The Rajya Sabha MP, who has now been expelled from the Samajwadi party, has denied the charges.
