CM Online, the state government's initiative wherein the chief minister directly interacts with people and looks into their grievances, seems to have become an effective tool in the hands of citizens to hold lax government officials to account. A PSI at Sola police station was suspended on Thursday by order of the CM's office after a woman accused Sola cops of bias in investigation of her dowry case.

Sola police sub-inspector DB Zala was suspended after Shilpa Kanji Desai, a resident of Bhagvatnagar Society, Thaltej, complained to the chief minister through CM Online, police sources said.

Shilpa had lodged a complaint at Sola police station on April 22 accusing four of her in-laws and one other person of harassing her for dowry. She stated in her complaint that her in-laws used to demand a car and money from her as dowry and would harass her physically and mentally.

Following Shilpa's complaint, a team of Sola police went to Tirupati Township in Patan, where her in-laws live. Though all the accused-Shilpa's husband Ashok, her father-in-law Amarat Desai, mother-in-law Shanta Desai and sister-in-law Sharmishtha-were present at their residence, police did not arrest them. Instead, the police allegedly recommended ways to secure bail to the accused, in case they be arrested later, Shilpa alleged in her complaint to the chief minister.

Sources said that Shilpa's father-in-law Amarat Desai is a retired police sub-inspector. After going into the details of Shilpa's case, the chief minister's office found the Sola police at fault and ordered city police officials to take appropriate action. Acting on the CM's order, the deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Zone-I suspended Zala on Thursday for not carrying out his duty properly.
