PSA Peugeot Citroen, the second largest European car manufacturer, will rollout the first car from its Sanand plant in the middle of 2014, a senior official of the France-based company said on Thursday.

“The work on the plant will start soon and we expect to rollout the first car from the plant in mid-2014. The plant will reach its full capacity of 1.70 lakh cars by the end of 2016,” Gregoire Olivier, managing board member of PSA Peugeot Citroen, and CEO of the company’s Asian Operations, told media-persons after performing the ground-breaking ceremony of the plant.

Peugeot will invest Rs4,000 crore for the plant, coming up near the existing Tata Nano plant in Sanand. To be spread over 600 acre, the plant will have the capacity to produce 1.70 lakh cars, which would be expandable to 3.40 lakh cars. The plant will also produce 1 lakh petrol engines per annum.

“The plant will produce C and upper B segment cars, which are our focus areas in India. We will start with one model, which would be increased to four models,” said Vincent Rambaud, director general of Peugeot.

Frederic Fabre, managing director of PCA Motors India, said that most of the cars produced at the Sanand plant would be sold in the domestic market, but the company would also export the cars to ASEAN and Australia.

Asked about the reasons for selecting Gujarat for its plant, Fabre said that the state’s strategic location played a key role in the decision.

“Gujarat is located between Delhi and Mumbai, the two biggest car markets. Availability of gas, power and infrastructure in the state were the other reasons for our decision to select Gujarat over the other states,” he said.

Peugeot also plans to create an Automotive Skills Development Institute in Sanand to contribute to the further growth and development of the automotive cluster in the area. According to officials, the company was targeting at-least 80% localisation in its cars.
