With the demand of electricity ever increasing in the country, the Centre has reiterated its
commitment to meet the requirement by adding capacity to the tune of one lakh MW under the 12th five-year plan, according to the Union power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.

The government has proposed to set to a target of one lakh MW power generation under the 12th five year plan to meet the burgeoning requirement of electricity throughout the country, he told reporters here last night.

Shinde, who was here to participate at a two-day meeting of the power utilities from across the country organized by the state-owned lender, Power Finance Corporation (PFC), said that the Centre has laid thrust on increase in the capacity addition in power over the years by setting a target of 78,000 MW under the ongoing 11th five-year plan.

With various state-owned and private sector constructing a number of power plants, including ultra mega power projects, the government will hopefully achieve the target, he said.

On the prospect of generation of nuclear power, Shinde said that it was too early to conceive setting up nuclear power plants as the process for tapping fuel and other technologies in this regard was still being worked out.

It will take some time to put in place infrastructure like supply of fuel and related technologies for construction of nuclear power plants, the Union power minister said.

On the proposed target of nuclear power generation, he said that the capacity will be around 30,000 MW.
