Omar seeks Central support to tackle unemployment in J&K

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Friday sought a comprehensive and meaningful industrial package from the Centre for the state.

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Friday sought a comprehensive and meaningful industrial package from the Centre for the state to make it an attractive destination for private investment.

"While the government was the major employer in the state, it alone cannot absorb all unemployed persons. Large-scale involvement of the public sector is required to address unemployment issue," he told Union Home minister P Chidambaram who was on a two-day visit to the state.
     
Omar stressed on central assistance in addressing the unemployment crisis in the state and asked for a special drive by central government departments to recruit youth from the state. He said unemployment problem in the state has not only economic aspect but it creates unrest among the qualified and skilled youth resulting in law and order situation.

The chief minister also asked Chidambaram to simplify cumbersome travel procedures across Line of Control (LoC) and help create transport and banking facilities for traders
exporting goods across the LoC.
     
Omar, who held a long meeting with the Home minister about security and development issues of the state, also asked him to take up with China the opening of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Laddakh. The chief minister made strong case for central assistance for development projects in the state including extension of railway network in the state, compensation for the losses the state is bearing for Indus Water Treaty besides starting work on the conversion of Jammu-Srinagar highway.
   
The chief minister asked Chidamabaram to help in improving the infrastructure at Srinagar Airport for landing in low visibility. He also put forward a demand for sanctioning two campuses, one each at Jammu and Srinagar, for a central univesity approved by the Centre. He also sought central assistance in meeting recurring costs for IRP battalions.
    
Making a case for central assistance for implementation of Sixth Pay Commission report, the chief minister requested the Union Home minister to support the state to get funds to meet the additional expenditure on this account. The Home Minister accepted that the state has gone through a difficult period and the peculiar problems here demand specific attention.
     
"We will look at it along with security aspects", he added while assuring Omar of full support to the state from Centre. Chidambaram said he would discuss speedy implementation of central government schemes with those concerned in New Delhi.
