No breakdown of law and order in the state: UP govt

Under attack over a spate of crimes against women in UP, Mayawati government today said there is no breakdown of law and order situation in the state and stern and prompt action was being taken against the culprits.

It alleged that Samajwadi Party workers were involved in the brutal stabbing of a teenage girl by two youths who were trying to rape her in Kannauj.

"Projection that there is law and order breakdown in the state, arrangement is lacking and criminals are free to commit crime is not right. Wherever incident take place stern action has been taken by the government," secretary, information, Prashant Trivedi said.

He said that in Kannauj where a 14-year-old girl was stabbed in her eye after resisting rape attempt, prompt action was taken wherein one of the accused was arrested and two policemen placed under suspension on charges of laxity.

"The two youths Kuldeep, 18, and Niranjan Yadav, 17, who attacked the girl after failing to rape her are Samajwadi Party workers," Trivedi said.

He said that Niranjan has been arrested and raids were being carried out to arrest the second accused.

"Sub-inspector Shiv Shanker Singh and constable Fakhruddin had been placed under suspension for not lodging FIR and failing to inform their seniors," he said.

He said that an 18-year-old dalit girl was raped at gunpoint by one Shakti Singh in Basti district. An FIR has been lodged and efforts were being made to arrest the accused.

Chief minister Mayawati, meanwhile accused the media of trying to mislead the people by raising old cases.

"The opposition parties want to corner me and my party. I am struggling with this at every stage. But I want tell that I am not going to accept defeat due to opposition's tricks. Because, unlike other leaders I have not come to politics through dynasty. I have worked on the ground and suffered. I know how to fight in tough times," the BSP supremo said.

Trivedi said, "There were reports from May that a 15-year-old girl was held captive and raped for 14 days which is not correct," he said.

The secretary said that the girl, a student of Dhanwanti Balika Inter College eloped with the college watchman Mathura Rajbhar on June 4.

"The girl, who was recovered by police today, has admitted that she was not forced, but as the matter involved a minor a rape case has been lodged against Mathura," he said.

He said that drawing conclusion that such incidents are taking place due to lack of arrangements and proper action was not justified.

"It's a sad incident, but before making any interpretation facts should be taken into account. The government and administration is committed to the rule of law," Trivedi said.
