Mayawati asks officials to ensure prohibited items don't reach jails

Talking tough, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati today asked officials to ensure that prohibited articles donot reach jails across the state, saying such items cannot be smuggled into prisons without the connivance of police personnel.

Reviewing the law and order scenario in the state at a high level meeting here, Mayawati said, "Recovery of prohibited articles from jails is a serious matter. Such articles cannot reach inside jails without the help of police personnel."

Directing the officials to ensure that such incidents were stopped at all costs, she said a close watch should be kept on the activities of jailed mafias.

Noting that a lot of improvement was needed in the functioning of the jail department, she asked the officials to conduct surprise inspection of prisons and take strict action in case of laxities detected at any level.

She said under-construction jails should be completed at the earliest, so that pressure on the existing ones is reduced.

Calling for improvement in the functioning of police stations across the state, she asked the officers to ensure that destitutes and women approaching them with their problems get justice.

"Improve the functioning of police stations, the senior officers should monitor the situation and strict action should be taken against erring staff if laxity is detected at any level," Mayawati said.

She also asked the officials to see to it that uniform and speedy development work is carried out in Naxal-hit areas.

Expressing dissatisfaction over the slow pace of distribution of land lease among tribals, she said special focus should be given to it.

The chief minister directed the officers to ensure smooth transport system in Lucknow and other big cities.

She directed that funds should be arranged for the honourable disposal of the unclaimed bodies and the post mortem houses should also be tidied up.

The CM also directed the officers to make the fire fighting services of the state more effective.
