Manekchowk cleared, Walled City to breathe easy

Demolition drive continued in Madhupura, Maninagar and Nikol wards.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) took its demolition drive to the Walled City on Saturday. The demolition drive entered its sixth day on Saturday.

The move was aimed at removing encroachments to decongest the narrow lanes of the Walled City. The road side market that encroached on the narrow streets of the Walled

City left little room for pedestrians and vehicles to pass through.The encroachment drive was carried out in the Manekchowk, Rani no Hajiro and other areas of the Walled City. Around 60 square metre of land was freed in the central zone when officials removed encroachments on the ground level in Madhupura TP scheme number 40. 

A shopkeeper in Manekchowk, Uresh said the AMC officials were harassing the  shopkeepers under the guise of the encroachment drive. "The AMC officials come at will and take things that are kept outside our shop. Keeping things outside the shop is not encroachment," said Uresh.

Of all the zones the New West Zone saw majority of the demolition with around 725 square metre of land being freed on Saturday. 

The areas from where encroachment was removed include Ghatlodia Sola road - around 300 square metre and Akanksha Flat in Ghatlodia - 30 square metre.

Some 60 square metre of land in Prabhat Chowk and 125 square metre of land at Rupam Shopping Centre was freed of encroachment. In other part of the city, encroachments in Nikol ward was demolished when officials removed two sheds spread over an area of 240 square metre of land.

In the north zone of the city- which includes area like Thakkarnagar- some 260 shops were demolished. On Saturday, around 20 shops were demolished from Trimurti complex in India Colony.

In the south zone, parking space was freed in the cellar area opposite Jaldhara water park. The demolition drive will continue on Sunday.
