Surat police busted a liquor scam at a five star hotel here. The scam involved sale of liquor meant for permit holders to ordinary people, at high rates. While a case has been registered against the hotel staff responsible, two police officials have also been suspended in the incident.
Two policemen were also suspended. The scam was unearthed at The Gateway Hotel at Athwalines in a joint operation carried by state prohibition and excise departments. While investigating hotel records, officials found that liquor worth Rs5.46 lakh meant for permit holders had so far been sold to people without liquor permits. The most shocking part is that, while selling liquor to unlicensed people, the hotel staff prepared fake bills to show that the liquor was purchased by permit holders.
"In the records, they showed that permit holders purchased the specified stock. However, when we cross-checked, we found the information wrong. Under the guise of selling liquor to permit holders, they sold it to non-permit holders," an official said, requesting anonymity.
He added that fake permit numbers were mentioned in bills for transactions with non-permit holders. While hotel staff is clearly involved in the case, so are the police officials who were on duty at the liquor shop, he added.
Taken aback by this revelation, Surat police immediately suspended police inspector NK Sindha and constable Khandu Parmar, for their alleged involvement in the scam. The duo was posted at the liquor shop.
A complaint has been registered in the incident. Apart from two police officials, the manager of the Gateway's wine shop, Ketan Patel has been alleged the mastermind of this first class bootlegging scam. Umra police is investigating the matter.
