A suspected member of the Chhota Rajan gang was arrested today for his alleged role in the firing that killed the driver of Iqbal Kaskar, brother of fugitive mob boss Dawood Ibrahim, police said today.

With this, the total number of persons arrested in the case has gone up to seven.

Police also claimed that the murder of Arif Syed Abu Bukha, the driver of Kaskar, was a result of "mistaken identity" and the actual target was Hanif Talwar, a very close aide of Dawood.

"DK Rao, a close aide of Rajan, was arrested in connection with the firing incident after he was extensively questioned yesterday," additional police commissioner (crime) Deven Bharti said.

Rao was produced before a local court which remanded him in police custody till July 20, police said.

According to sources, Rao had given Rs3 lakh to arrested accused Umed-Ur-Rehman, 27, and Aasid Jaan Mohammed Shaikh, 41, who played a key role in the killing.

Two gunmen had fired outside Kaksar's residence on Pakmodia street in south Mumbai on May 17, killing Bukha. Kaskar was not present at the site when the incident happened.

The two shooters Syyed Ali, 29, a resident of Mumbai, and Indra Khatri, 27, had been arrested from near JJ Hospital while they were trying to flee.

"The shooters were told to kill Hanif. When the shooters were shown the target (Hanif), Arif was standing next to Hanif. The shooters got confused and killed Arif," said a senior police official on condition of anonymity.

On Thursday, Rehman, 27, a sharpshooter and active member of Rajan's gang, and his associate Aasid were apprehended in Goa and subsequently arrested.

On May 25, two more accused Abdul Rashad Shaikh, 21, and Adnan Idaayad Sayyed, 21, were arrested.
