Kamal Hassan praises M Karunanidhi for bringing out insurance scheme

Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi today came in for praise from noted actor Kamal Hassan, who lauded a state government health insurance scheme to help economically poor people.
   
The actor noted the scheme was already being implemented in the state, "even when developed nations like US are still debating on whether to pass the health bill and conducting various vote on accounts."

"This is not a political statement, but just a humanitarian statement," Hassan said.
   
The actor, 55, was speaking to reporters to announce a fund raising event, got up by World Malayalee Council (Chennai Chapter) and Madras Medical Mission.

He said the Kalaignar insurance scheme launched last year, would especially help children of BPL families, but pointed out that there are many such children who need help.

"There are many more children from BPL families. The government has strengthened our cause and we are very grateful for that," he said.

The Council and MMC have appointed Kamal Hassan as the Project Ambassador for this cause.

He said the Council and MMC proposed to set up an orphanage for AIDS affected children in Chennai, for which a fund raising event would be held later this month, in which artistes from Tamil Nadu and Kerala film industry are expected to participate

On his role as Project Ambassador, Hassan said he was happy with whichever post he was given and would be most satisfied with doing his bit for the welfare of children.
