Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) and Central Water Commission (CWC) have come out with a blueprint to inter-link the major rivers of the country through a series of canals without any ecological problems.

India-Water Resources Information System (WRIS), a joint venture of ISRO and CWC, has prepared a blue print to inter-link the major rivers of the country through a series of canals.
“Inter-linking the rivers will ensure the transfer of flood waters from water surplus basins to water deficient rivers. Flood waters in the Brahmaputra and the Barak in the north could be transferred to water starved Vaigai in Tamil Nadu,” Dr Bidyut Kumar Bhadra, senior scientist, Isro’s Regional Remote Sensing Centre, Jodhpur, told DNA.

Rivers like the Brahmaputra and the Ganges get flooded in summer due to melting of glaciers in the Himalayas. Severe drought and ravaging floods have become perennial problems of the country. While Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharahtra and Gujarat undergo drought for most part of the year, states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Assam face floods which inundate human habitats, destroy agricultural lands and claim thousands of lives every year.

“While one part of the country faces drought, other part is in a perpetual state of floods. This could be effectively controlled by proper management of water,” former president APJ Abdul Kalam has said.

The Technology, Information Forecasting and Assessment Council, a think tank of engineers and scientists floated by Kalam, had asked for the transfer of surplus water to drought hit areas through a network of link canals.
