The Malta theatre festival, Europe's one of the most colourful and delightful public events, is expected to see India's participation in 2012 through performing arts.

India has committed to participate in the 2012 edition of the festival as part cooperation in the cultural arena agreed upon between India and Poland recently.

The two countries have also agreed to cooperate in conservation and digitisation of archival materials, collaboration in transfer of technology and management of World Heritage Sites.

The understanding was reached during the recent visit of a Polish delegation led by minister of culture and national heritage Bogdan Zdrojewski.

During bilateral talks between the Polish delegation and the Indian side led by culture secretary Jawhar Sarkar, the two sides also decided to take measures to exchange reciprocal exhibitions, and hold joint collaboration in translation of famous literary works as also restoration of modern art.

India also agreed to participate in the Malta Festival in 2012 by way of contributing through performing arts and theatre, the ministry of culture said in a statement.

Watched by 100,000 spectators every year in Poznan, the Malta theatre festival is one of the most keenly awaited yearly international theatre events in the open theatre category.

Rather than indoor performances, the festival that was launched in 1991 has a speciality of groups performing in open-air spaces and is ideal for street theatre troupes. This is what makes the event unconventionally famous.

The performances are held on the Malta lake, giving the festival its name, besides streets, squares, courtyards, tents, parks and beaches bustle with activity.

The two countries have also agreed to cooperate in modernisation of museums and sharing of Indian experience in stone art with the Polish under the cooperation programme for 2010-2013, that was signed in New Delhi on September 7.
