The United States sees great potential for developing closer ties with Gujarat, a top official of the American Centre in Mumbai, said in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

"The entrepreneurial spirit of Gujarati community is amazing. We see great potential in developing close ties between US and Gujarat in various fields," said Anne Grimes, director, American Centre. Grimes is in city to take part in the sixth anniversary celebrations of The American Corner at AMA Complex, ATIRA Campus.

While noting that Gujarati was the only regional language of India which featured in the US census, she said that Gujaratis were doing very well in the US. Asked about the upcoming India visit of US president Barack Obama, Grimes said, "We are gearing up for president Obama's visit to India later this year. We do not yet know the dates of his visit or the places he will be visiting, but it will be a huge event."

She, however, added that president Obama was a huge admirer of Mahatma Gandhi, and that there could be some kind of Gandhian programme during the president's visit.

Grimes also said that relations between India and the US have become better in the recent past, and they will improve further in the years to come. She mentioned security co-operation, science & technology, healthcare, education and energy as some of the focus areas where India and the US were working closely.

"We are also focusing on increased cultural exchanges between the two countries," she said, adding that while the number of Indian students in US had risen steadily over the years, they want to see more American students coming to India for studies. A number of US institutes are keen to start operations in India, she said.

Grimes said that US was also stepping up its visa processing infrastructure in India in view of increased visa applications.
