The former dean of Gujarat University's Economics department Pradip Prajapati, who was suspended on September 16, 2010 for professional misconduct, has been reinstated as professor.

Prajapati joined duty on Monday after receiving an order from the university. Vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi said that Prajapati's suspension has been  called off in the interest of students.

"Executive council members have discussed the issue and agreed to reinstate Prajapati on humanitarian grounds," said Trivedi.

However, Prajapati claimed that the V-C has bowed down after the university has received an order from the high court demanding explanation for his suspension.

Prajapati has always maintained that he was targeted by the V-C because he wrote a letter to the governor and state government officials regarding alleged misuse of development funds and malpractices in illegal fund transfers by university officials.

"Immediately after I sent my letter to the higher officials, I was suspended from the post of professor and dean, that too without any concrete reason," said Prajapati.

After the suspension, Prajapati appealed in a tribunal, which according to him, also gave the verdict in his favour.

"Since they did not follow the order of the tribunal, I had to move the high court," said Prajapati.

During his suspension, Prajapati had tried to file an FIR at the University police station against the V-C for alleged fund transfers and misuse of funds.

"Since they have not registered an FIR, I knocked on the doors of the DGP, who instructed the Commissioner of Police (CP) to quickly take action in the matter," said Prajapati.

Many people close to the developments believe that this is an attempt by the V-C to settle all issues with Prajapati. According to them, several syndicate members have told the vice-chancellor to make peace with Prajapati because there is every possibility that the FIR may get registered after the intervention of the CP.

Prajapati has maintained that he will stick to his stand even after the 'humanitarian approach' of the V-C. "My suspension has nothing to do with my fight against corruption in Gujarat University. I will not withdraw my complaint," Prajapati said.
