When local authorities of the Panchmahal district had lost all hope of pulling out a dead body from a 1000 feet deep gorge of Pavagadh Hill, expert climbers from Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services showed them how to do it.

With the help of ropes and harnesses, the officials raised the body through the gorge where it was lying for the past three days.

On April 13, an unidentified man committed suicide by jumping off a spot near Bhadrakali Temple on the Pavagadh Hill into a 1,000 feet deep gorge. Officials of Archeological Survey of India along with local police of Halol taluka roped in fire department officials of Halol, Kalol and Vadodara, but could not recover the body even after three days.

The local authorities then contacted the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) and sought their help in carrying out the operation.

AFES sent eight of their best men with all kinds of mountaineering equipment including harnesses, imported climbing ropes, rope ladders, and other safety tools. They reached the temple on April 17 at 9am and began the operation. The firemen first climbed down the gorge with the help of a harness and rope ladders.
Mukesh Nakum of Maninagar fire station said, "When the firemen were climbing down, some of our men were holding the ropes for them. This created traction due to which some rocks fell on those holding the ropes." Three jawans finally reached the spot where the body was hanging and pulled it out of the gorge.

"The place was stinking. We wrapped a jute bag around the body and pulled it up. The operation started at 9am and ended at 2pm," said Nakum.

Rajesh Bhatt, additional chief fire officer said, “It is our duty to save people's lives. However, in this case, our men put their own lives at risk for a dead body and set an example of humanitarianism."
