Taking a dig at Congress, BJP president Nitin Gadkari today claimed that even senior leaders like Manmohan Singh could never become president of the ruling party as the post is reserved for a particular family.

"I was an ordinary worker. I did not know the roads of Delhi. I did not know the people in Delhi. Still, the party has elected me, selected me as leader of the party. It only happens in BJP. It will never happen in Congress. If Manmohan Singh dreams of becoming the party president, it will never be possible. Because the Congress party president's post is reserved for a family," he said here.

Gadkari was addressing the state executive meeting of BJP's Andhra Pradesh unit.

Changing tracks, he said the continuing farmer suicides, growing unemployment, steep rise in prices of essential commodities bear testimony to the failures of the Congress-led UPA government.

The Congress rule in Andhra Pradesh is marked by infighting in the ruling party and also failures like non-implementation of welfare policies and irrigation projects, he added.

In an indirect reference to Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi, he said the regional party leader has met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, which is an indication of the things to come.

Suggesting that Andhra Pradesh should now support a national party (to come to power), he said the prevailing situation in the state provided an opportunity for the BJP.

He asked the partymen to strive for expanding the BJP in Andhra Pradesh so that it emerged as a decisive power in the next general elections

BJP functionaries need not feel dejected about its poor strength in the state as the saffron outfit, with just two Lok Sabha members in 1984, grew to position of being able to rule the country, he said.

Expressing sorrow over the suicides of handloom weavers in the state, the BJP president said he would appoint a committee of MPs to study the issue, which, he said, will be raised in Parliament subsequently.
