Centre to bring down power deficit to 3% by 2017

Centre intends to bring down the power deficit from the present 12% to 3% by end of the 12th five year Plan, a top official today said.
   
"We are looking at bringing down power deficit to 3% by end of 2017 from the present 12%", joint secretary Department of Disinvestment, ministry of finance, Sidhartha Pradhan told reporters here.
  
Speaking on the sidelines of SJVN Limited's initial public offering of 415,000,000 equity shares of Rs10 each for cash through an offer for sale by the Government, he said the country had to generate 3.70 lakh mw of power by 2017-18 from the present 1.60 lakh mw of power and for this Rs11,40,000 crore was needed.
   
"While 25,000 mw of power will be added in the next two years, another 1.85 lakh mw of power will be added by 2017-18", Pradhan said adding by 2030, India needs to generate eight lakh mw of power, he said.
   
The per capita power consumption in the country at 700 units was much lower compared to US (11,000 units) and China (2,800 units), Pradhan said.
   
He said national transmission corridor to connect inter-state power supply will be facilitated by 2017.
   
Pradhan said SJVN Limited, a hydroelectric power generation company orginally established as a joint venture between the Union government and Himachal Pradesh government to develop and operate Nathpa Jhakri Power Station on river Sutlej in HP to generate 1,500 mw of power, is also undertaking a number of projects in Uttarakhand, Manipur, Nepal and Bhutan.
   
"The firm, a mini-Ratna public sector company, has also been invited to take up a project in Georgia in Central Asia", he said.
