The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has refused to renew the lease agreement with the Auto Rickshaw Drivers Cooperative Society Ltd. The civic body has not given a reason for not renewing the agreement. Though the society had sent a renewal application, the civic body after four months, issued a notice to the body to vacate the plot within three days.

The plot adjacent to the hospital for contagious diseases near Astodia Gate was given on lease to the Society that runs a petrol pump and CNG station there.  The society paid a rent of Rs7,500 to the civic body for the plot measuring around 408 sq yard. The lease agreement of the said plot expired in May 2009.  The society had applied for renewal of the lease agreement in February 2009.

"We followed up the matter with the civic body and were informed that the matter is still under discussion," said Ram Prajapati, president of  Auto Rickshaw Drivers Cooperative Society.

Earlier speaker of the Gujarat Assembly, Ashok Bhatt, had written a letter to the AMC authorities about the issue.  Bhatt stated in his letter that as the society has not violated any rules the lease should be renewed like it has been done in number of cases.

However, all of a sudden, the civic body issued a notice on October 1, 2009 to the society asking it to vacate the plot in three days. It also asked for Rs20,000 towards rent due for four months.

"It was nothing but a shock as we were expecting a renewal of the lease agreement," said Prajapati. Dy MC, IK Patel, said that the civic body had received an application to reconsider the decision and it will be reviewed.
