We can only rue the fact that we, the citizens of India, did not have the foresight or the courage to acknowledge his gifts and his seminal contribution to the world of Indian art.

As almost everyone in the Indian art world will avow, Husainsaab or baba, as he was known, was an iconic persona. During the course of his lifetime itself, he came to be known as a living legend.

For this man of humble beginnings, succeeded in capturing the imagination of the world. M F Husain was recognised as much for his art as his off-canvas exploits, including the Bollywood beauties who inspired him.

Still, both intelligentsia and the common man were familiar with his powerful, fluid lines, the strong signature stroke, the beauteous buxom bodies, and the free flying horses... Certainly, no other Indian artist has won so many bouquets, and yes, some misplaced brickbats.

And while the issues that led to his being 'exiled', so to speak, can be debated upon till kingdom comes, the fact is that his departure from India was a collective loss. That he died as a citizen of Qatar in a hospital in London in the wee hours of Thursday morning, should remain a matter of national shame.

We can only rue the fact that we, the citizens of India, did not have the foresight or the courage to acknowledge his gifts and his seminal contribution to the world of Indian art.

That no one could stand up for him, and by that uphold democracy and the right to freedom of expression, is a blot on the fabric of this nation. The irony is that, in his wake, officials are busy mouthing platitudes and lip sympathy about this great loss.

India was "mother" to M F Husain: he held this land close to his heart. No rabid vote bank seeking mob or mean-minded politician can take that away.

Ahmedabad city is privileged to bear two priceless legacies: The frescoes within Amdavad ni Gufa and the largeish keepsake at Lucky tea stall, that Husainsaab left behind in a characteristically generous gesture.

We can only hope that the city will respect this gift and allow future generations to view his art. A blithe spirit, bound only by the pursuit of art, Husain roamed the world during his lifetime, free of societal shackles, brimming with pure love. Much like a Sufi soul.
