While they’ve miserably failed to catch or take action against Ahmedabad’s notorious ‘biker gangs’, the city police are now taking some rather unusual steps to curb the speeding menace.

Instead of intensifying their vigil on the bikers, the police will now approach the revenue department and income-tax department, to avail information on the income of people who provide such expensive motorbikes to their wards.

“When a biker is nabbed by the police for speeding, the deputy police commissioner of that area will pass his details to the revenue and income tax departments, to know the sources of income of his parents,” a senior IPS officer told DNA.

These departments will, with the help of the police, eventually keep a tab on the people who purchase and provide expensive motorbikes to their children.

The city police had, at the end of several rounds of patrolling, nabbed a few speeding bikers in the city. However, they have not seized any expensive imported bikes since the menace of speeding bikers has been noticed.

“The idea behind involving the revenue and I-T departments is to create pressure on the parents, and discourage them from purchasing and gifting expensive bikes to their children,” director general of police, SS Khandwawala, told DNA. He added that parents indulging their wards with such bikes will be questioned in connection with their income and property.

Khandwawala said that to speed up the process, the procedure of taking details from the revenue and income tax departments will be carried out by a senior officer.

A senior cop added that even though the term ‘biker gangs’ is used for youth speeding on city streets on expensive bikes, they do not appear to be involved in any crimes. They’ve mainly been responsible for creating nuisance on the city, and inciting fear among commuters.
