The dog menace in the city is increasing day by day and, the opposition party is blaming the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)'s irresponsibility for the rising menace.

Addressing the media, leader of opposition Badruddin Shaikh said, "According to the survey conducted by NGO Human Society, the population of dogs in June 2011 was 2.2 lakh, which has now increased to around 2.75 lakh. Despite the rapid rise in dog population, the civic body is still being irresponsible and is not taking up the job of sterilisation of dogs."

Shaikh further said that the contract for dog sterilisation awarded by AMC is inactive since June 2010, due to which the menace has increased considerably. Citing some recent examples, he said that in Behrampura ward, the road of sewage farm had more than 34 dead dogs on the road, which was major inconvenience for the citizens.

Recently, an 11-year-old boy of Sarkhej was severely attacked by stray dogs . "Stray dogs create trouble for citizens commuting at night by attacking them. With the increasing number of dogs, the population will reach 4 lakh in a short time, which will only add to the existing nuisance," added Shaikh.
