Standing committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Thursday approved proposal for restoration of the historical Dandi Bridge near Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. The restoration work will be carried out at a cost of Rs2.49 crore.

Though very much in the future, the project is expected to be completed in one year once restoration work begins.
As per an official of the heritage department of AMC, “The entire plan is to have complete restoration of the bridge. The work includes changing the fragile wooden beam, reinforcement of the rusted steel structure, strengthening the bridge’s foundation and painting work.”

In what will come as good news to many activists and heritage lovers, who have been trying to bring to AMC’s notice the bridge’s deteriorating condition, the project also entails development and upgradation of surrounding areas of the Dandi bridge.

Currently, garbage dumping is rampant under the bridge which sullies the surroundings. The garbage heaps will be removed and the surroundings will be cleaned as part of the project. Apparently, volunteers of Gandhi ashram had demanded restoration of the bridge.
