East and west Ahmedabad is all set to be bridged by India's best mass transit system. For, the Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited (AJL) is gearing up to expand its Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) to areas in the eastern part of the city.

With BRTS extending its network from Chandranagar to Kankaria on December 25, the day the popular Kankaria Carnival begins, the AJL is preparing to meet its next target of completing the 25 km stretch of the corridor.  After extending the service to another 5 km from Chandranagar to Kankaria, the AJL will further extend the BRTS stretch from Kankaria to Maninagar and Dani Limda to Narol.  This means the AJL will have to complete the work on 9 km stretch.

It should be noted that the AJL is working overtime to complete the work on the stretch from Chandranagar to Kankaria. But, sources say that even if the 5.5 km corridor to Kankaria is finished before December 25, three bus stands on the stretch will not be completely ready for use. "Three bus stations- Khodiarnagar, Dani Limda and Kankaria are expected to be ready by December 25. But in the rest of three bus stands on the stretch, the ITES services and automated doors will not be installed by that time," said a source close to the development.

The source said that it will not be possible to first complete the service in all bus stations and then launch the second corridor of the BRTS. "This is because chief minister Narendra Modi has ordered the AMC bosses to extend BRTS to Kankaria by December 25," said the source.

So, while following Modi's order, AJL will be able to finish building the stretch, but it will not be able to provide all the facilities at three bus stands on the stretch.
These bus stands are  - Vaikunthdham, Swaminarayan temple and Kankaria telephone exchange. At these bus stands, automated doors will not be put up, which may put passengers at risk.

Moreover, ticket distribution at these three bus stands will not be computerised. The AJL is planning to get six more buses to meet the demand of commuters from RTO to Kankaria. At present the AJL runs 18 buses.
