Over 200 cricket fans were challaned for traffic violations in the national capital while they were celebrating India's victory over Sri Lanka in the World Cup.

A total of 192 persons were challaned during the night across the city with 102 fined for drunken driving. Thirty-one were challaned for dangerous driving, a senior police official said.

Special arrangements were made last night in the capital after Wednesday's spontaneous celebrations, following India's victory over Pakistan in the semifinals, resulted in massive traffic snarls.

On Wednesday night, around 70 people were challaned for drunken driving. On Friday night, 225 people were challaned, of which 158 for drunken driving.

Keeping in mind the Wednesday experience, police yesterday did not allow people to enter Connaught Place and India Gate inner-circle after 10:30 pm.

Almost all the traffic police personnel were on streets last night. "Leaves of personnel were cancelled, cranes were deployed with instructions to tow away vehicles and all 620 motorcycle-patrols were on duty," the official said.

The drive started around 6 PM and continued till 2:30 AM when the frenzy was at its peak.

Traffic across the city went for a toss as large number of people came out in their vehicles to celebrate the historic win.

Police erected barricades to ensure that there was no traffic jam near India Gate and Connaught Place but such measures did not stop the fans from celebrating.

However, the traffic was choked especially in areas near India Gate and Connaught Place. The most affected stretches were Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Tilak Marg, Janpath and Vikas Marg.

People also came out of their vehicles to shake hands with strangers to celebrate the victory.

The busy intersection at ITO saw huge traffic jam as Congress chief Sonia Gandhi joined delirious cricket fans to celebrate the victory.
