14th edition of IIT-B’s Techfest will give out awards worth over Rs15 lakh

for IIT-B's annual International Science and Technology Festival, Techfest, is  December 20. Yes, Techfest  is here and bigger than
the previous year, and is expecting approximately 5000 participants from Gujarat alone.

The 14th edition of Techfest will be held in the IIT Bombay campus from January 7-9, 2011. According to media coordinator, Rishabh Verma, "during Techfest 2010, we had overall footfall of approximately 72,000 of which 20,000 were participants. Of these 20,000 around 3000 students were from Gujarat alone, hence the expectation to receive more participants from our close neighbour is high."

Techfest is envisioned as the confluence of students, academia and the industry and over the years it has been successful in its endeavours to achieve these objectives.

With an aim to bring students closer to science and technology through many of its initiatives, Techfest has over 150 events spread over three days.

This year competitions have been broadly partitioned into major divisions like Architect - an event related to design and architecture; Autobots - comprising of events related to high end robotics; Parayaas - inviting ideas to shape a better future; Technopreneurship - a concourse of technology and entrepreneurship; Kaleidoscope - events related to unexplored fields of basic sciences; Kaspersky ISC - a global competition to improve level of security in IT; Code Maestros - this
will have all coding related events; Robowars - the third season of inter-collegiate combat robotics and Split Second - robotic machines battle out each other to win the race.

"A total of over 20 competitions are being organised this year at Techfest with a cumulative prize money worth over Rs15 lakh, one of the highest in the country. The major attractions at Techfest competitions this year would be Full Throttle and Robowars. Modelled on the lines of Rally Racing, Full Throttle is the race that has IC modelled cars vying to finish fastest. The prize money for Full Throttle is Rs55,000.

Robowars, the inter-collegiate event of combat robotics, is where robots equipped with the fiercest weaponry and toughest armour battle it out in a bid to be the best. The prize money at stake is Rs55,000," another media coordinator, Ronnie Philip, said.
