Twitter follows IIT Bombay grads at campus recruitments

As crores of Indians log in to popular social networking sites every day to keep in touch with their near and dear, international social media companies are turning to India for its technical smarts. On Saturday, day one of the placement season at IIT Bombay, Twitter and LinkedIn made their debut log-in at India’s premier engineering Institution.

Avijeet Chatterjee, head of the placement cell at IIT Bombay, said, “Twitter and LinkedIn have come to IIT for the first time.

The interviews are still going on so we wouldn’t like to comment on salary figures.” Both companies interviewed many candidates on Saturday. Till the time of going to press, the number of candidates selected wasn't available.

While Twitter is a social networking site, LinkedIn provides a professional network for its users. IIT Bombay is the first among the IITs to have both in its list of campus recruiters. The financial services company Blackstone also came to IIT Bombay for the first time this year. Facebook made its Indian recruitment debut through IIT Bombay in 2010-11 and is now a regular employer. Other regular hirers include Microsoft, Google, Wipro, IBM, Sony and Samsung.

Placement interviews are supposed to be continued till 2 am Sunday. More than 1,600 students are up for placement including BTech, MTech, Dual degree, MDes and PhDs students. Thirty-five companies visited the elite campus to hire the institution's graduates on the first day. The first phase of placement will go on till December 18. The second phase will start after the Christmas vacation in January.

Chatterjee declined to comment on potential salaries but it is widely known that IIT students fetch the highest salaries.
