BJP on Friday urged Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi to investigate the role of Delhi government officials supervising the women's helpline in connection with a case of an alleged suicide attempt by one of its staffers.

In a letter to Bassi, Vijender Gupta, the leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, expressed concern that the 181 women's helpline, which has outsourced its operations, is suffering from serious ills of "mal-administration".

On Wednesday, a helpline staffer allegedly consumed sleeping pills while on duty. She was rushed to LNJP hospital for treatment before being shifted to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital on Thursday morning, where her statement was recorded.

"It is essential that the culprits who abetted the suicide attempt be brought to book," Gupta said in a statement here in which he added that "the atmosphere at the helpline office does not befit a government office". He requested the Delhi Police Commissioner to get the matter thoroughly investigated and ensure that anybody found guilty is punished.
